What is it? Why is it important?
Intercurrent Events (ICE) are events that occur after treatment initiation. ICEs are normal events that may happen during study conduct, affecting the understanding how treatment works.
The occurrence of an ICE may:
- Affect the interpretation of outcome data (e.g. the intake of extra-medication by study participants), or
- Preclude the existence of outcome data entirely (e.g. study participant death or withdrawal from the study).
An ICE may include:
- Treatment discontinuation (e.g. due to treatment unwanted side effects, pregnancy)
- Switching to another treatment (e.g. rescue medication, starting with concomitant treatment not approved by the study protocol)
- Study withdrawal (e.g. personal reasons, lost to follow-up)
What do I need to do?
As a SP-INV, think about ICE(s) that are likely to happen during the conduct of your study, and discuss with the statistician about a strategy on how to handle ICEs (see the section on Estimands)
